How To Choose The Right Suspension For You
A suspension upgrade is a must for any 4WDer, Old Man Emu offers a complete suspension system tailored to prioritise ride quality and control. We also account for the style of driving, type of terrain and the amount of weight carried in those situations. As opposed to the one-size-fits-all lift kits, our approach allows us to calibrate the system to suit each vehicle without any sacrifices.
Spring Selection
When travelling off a designated path, the need to carry useful resources increases, alongside the need for added accessories that protect and allow your vehicle to handle the terrain. This means a lot of added strain on the suspension components of your vehicle.
There is a common misconception when it comes to spring selection, particularly around the meaning behind light, medium and heavy springs. Most people would assume that the spring selection relates to the terrain you are driving on, i.e. light for common road driving and heavy springs for complete off-road driving. However, this is not the case. The type of spring you choose relates to the constant weight load that your vehicle is under. For frontal springs, think of accessories like frontal protection and winches. The rear spring option should account for accessories such as drawer systems, bumpers, hardtops, etc. Under vehicle protection, side steps and roof racks distribute weight to both the front and the rear springs.
When focusing on your spring selection, you should concentrate on constant weight and not loaded weight. Constant weight applies to accessories that are constantly fitted to the vehicle (such as frontal protection) whereas loaded weight applies to cargo that can be removed such as gear and tools.
Shock Selection
Old Man Emu offers a range of shocks that are designed and manufactured to fit with Old Man Emu springs. Options such as the BP-51, Nitrocharger Sport and MT-64 are available for certain applications.
With a twin-tube design, the Nitrocharger Sport is an excellent upgrade opportunity. They have a valved design with more discs that allow better control of the vehicle at all speeds.
The mono-tube, 64mm internal bore, MT-64 has a single-body design which utilises a floating piston at the top of the shock body to separate the oil and nitrogen gas. The MT-64 is perfect for handling heavy loads and doing it for a long distance on a mix of terrain.
The BP-51 range of high-performance, bypass shock absorbers is the result of an exhaustive development process aimed at delivering the ultimate in both comfort and control. The BP-51 is a user-adjustable internal bypass 4WD shock absorber that delivers increased comfort and control; both on and off-road.
Additional Parts
Old Man Emu suspension systems are designed to work in conjunction with your original suspension components (unless stated otherwise) meaning you can upgrade your suspension a bit at a time, to find what really works for you.
