On-Board vs Portable & Twin vs Single Air Compressors

Choosing between on-board and portable air compressors isn't just down to what your personal preference is but more to do with what your needs are. If you are new to the off-road world or are just starting to venture into it, you may find portable air compressors work just fine, we suggest portable air compressors for people who are just starting out. Portable pumps tend to be easier to store and more importantly, they are still very dependable.

The biggest advantages of a portable pump are how easy they are to store and the mobility that comes with them. Portable air is also useful for pumping up smaller things like footballs or a float tube for fishing, but can also be used for larger things such as a small air mattress for camping.

However, portable air compressors will always have size limitations, which means they will be running constantly to do heavy jobs. It wouldn't be ideal to haul around a massive 'portable' air compressor (which includes a tank) that will make you feel like you're breaking your back. Because smaller air pumps don't have stored air this also means they don't have the capacity to run air tools.

We currently have an offer on for portable air compressors. If you buy one, you will receive a speedy seal kit, a blow gun, a digital tyre inflator and an arb tyre deflator, all FREE of charge.

Something to keep in mind is that air pumps get hot after use so make sure you are careful when handling them. The duty cycle of the air pump is another important consideration. The duty cycle measure will tell you how much use you can get out of the pump before it overheats, a 100% duty cycle will run for an hour, whereas a 50% duty cycle will run for 30 minutes and so forth. Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI) rating is another important factor which will inform you how much pressure your pump can produce. To be safe, you should always get a pump with a higher PSI rating than you need, for example, if your tyres need 80 PSI, you should conside a pump between 120 PSI and 150 PSI.

On-board pumps are a more advanced air system, the price will increase along with the space it will need in your vehicle. On-board systems include an added air tank, extra hoses, and a couple of valves. As the cost and space increases so does the usability of your air compressor.

We also currently have an offer on on-board air compressors, if you buy one, you will receive a free Pump Up Kit completely FREE of charge.

You will have a higher amount of air to supply your air locker and tools etc. One of the biggest benefits is the amount of air you will now have at your disposal, however, you can still upgrade your on-board compressor by increasing the size of the tank, or adding additional pumps to supply even more air to your pre-existing system. You now also have the option to have your pump ready with pre-filled air at whatever size you have chosen for your tank, allowing for quicker air up times for your tyres. It might not sound like a major benefit but when you're constantly adjusting your tyres according to the ground you are driving on, this can save a huge amount of time.

Single air compressors are more affordable and take less space, however they are also noticeably slower than a twin compressor. Twin air compressors are bigger and faster, however they are more expensive than a single. If you are constantly adjusting your tyres due to a constant change in terrain, a twin compressor will save you a lot of time and remove the extra burden of having to wait longer for your tyres to adjust.

Overall, it comes down to your personal preference and your budget.
